QuisLex is a legal services provider which deals with complex document review, contract management and compliance projects for corporations and law firms. Its eDiscovery projects cover litigation, investigations both internal and for regulatory purposes, and compliance.
QuisLex employs more than 1,000 lawyers, mainly at its large and modern facility in Hyderabad, India but also in the US. Their work is backed by a wide range of technology tools. The skill which has led to QuisLex’s recent expansion lies in the project management which ties together many different technologies with the human teams.
QuisLex has recently been awarded a US Patent for “System and Method to Determine Quality of a Document Screening Process” issued in the names of Sirisha Gummaregula, COO, and Sreekanth Dharmakari, VP, Business Process.
The patent embraces a document review process which finds an appropriate balance between accuracy, speed and efficiency. At its heart, this involves defining and measuring the metrics of review, calibrating the results, and analysing deviations and similarities. The process also includes sampling strategies designed to help identify non-relevant documents in a defensible manner and to prioritise the relevant documents for review.
I had the opportunity to speak to Sirisha Gummaregula. She said that discovery generates a lot of metrics which, when properly analysed, can be used to satisfy the lawyers, and thence their opponents and the court or regulator, as to the quality of the end product while keeping the costs of the project within a reasonable range.
The application for a patent is a rigourous process. The award of a patent implies novelty as well as rigour and there was, Sirisha Gummaregula said, a “good back and forth with the patent examiner” in arriving at a description of processes which were not tied to any particular technology.
Increasingly (and rightly) clients want to be satisfied about a range of factors before entrusting their reviews to a third party. All QuisLex’s data centres have ISO certificates for quality management and the company is regularly audited by clients in relation both to quality and security – the latter becoming a an increasingly significant element. Sirisha Gummaregula said that QuisLex offers seven layers of security before their employees see a document. It is, she said, “the core of what we do” and says the clients are confident with the rigour which QuisLex applies to its processes.
