ILTA is the International Legal Technology Association. ILTA works hard all year encouraging the sharing of ideas between those whose business involves (or should involve) the application of technology to a wide range of legal functions and issues.
For many, “ILTA” is synonymous with ILTA’s big annual conference held in August each year. This year ILTACON2017 is in Las Vegas, and I am going, as I always do.
I go there wearing my press hat and it is one of the few events I attend whether or not I am participating in a panel. Quite often, however, I end up taking part in something, and this year I am moderating a panel called Managing data from the EU during litigation.
The panel members are Mollie Nichols, of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, Ben Rusch, VP, Review Solutions – Europe and APAC at Consilio, Jonathan Wilan of Baker McKenzie, and Michael Boggs of Holland and Hart.
Our aim is to cover the current status of EU data privacy issues, including the GDPR, the Privacy Shield and other implications arising when US courts and authorities want to access data held abroad. Our aim, with the help of all these very hands-on people, is to give a practical overview of the issues posed by the conflict between wide US eDiscovery demands and the restraints of privacy and data protection (among other things) when data is situated in the EU, APAC jurisdictions or elsewhere.
As always at ILTA, my main aim is to listen rather than talk and to see as many people as possible to help me stay aware of what is happening in eDiscovery and to know what developments are coming.
I will be accompanied by my son Charlie, and we hope, as always, to record interviews with people who have something to add to the discussion.
ILTACON2017 is not just for discovery, and, indeed, not just for work. There is, as always, a wide range of recreational and networking events and there will be others, whether formally organised or not, which do not appear on the agenda.
If you are there, do come and say hello – we are there from Friday night until Wednesday evening.
