Speed is important in eDiscovery whether that is for litigation or for investigations. This is partly because time is money, and anything which reduces time reduces also the cost of the investigation, but there are other reasons why the advantage lies with the party who can get most quickly to the data which matters and turn it into usable information.
It may dictate strategy, such as the decision to fight or not to fight a civil case; it may steer an approach to a regulator which may be a confident assertion that all is well or a timely admission that there are problems to be addressed; in an internal investigation, speedy analysis of the data may bring a swift end to wrongdoing.
I caught up with Eddie Sheehy, CEO of Nuix, at ILTA in Las Vegas and asked him about this. It is the combination of processing speed and graphical tools which matters, he said; armed with both, a lawyer or investigator is able to understand the context very quickly, to see who is involved, and to drill down into the detail. The data tells the story in as few steps as possible.
Nuix Web Review & Analytics had been launched 12 months before our meeting, he said, and is Nuix’s fastest-growing eDiscovery product. It has sold over 1,000 concurrent licences, each with multiple users per licence. Those users do not have to go through a whole linear review of all the data before they can begin analysis of the facts, context and story.
