Epiq Systems, owners of the successful document review platform DocuMatrix and sponsors of the e-Disclosure Information Project, has appointed John Lang as IT Director of its UK office with a Europe-wide brief. His responsibilities will include the development of Epiq Systems’ IT infrastructure in the UK and the evaluation of new technologies to help maintain a high quality of customer service.
The role extends beyond the UK as Epiq takes on bigger and more complex projects which cross multiple countries. Epiq Systems Limited (the UK division of Epiq Systems Inc.) works with 4 out of 5 of the magic circle law firms – and at a global level with 48 of the top Global 50 law firms.
DocuMatrix is a hosted platform, that is, Epiq holds your documents data and makes it available from anywhere 24/7. Much of the point of using a hosted platform is to pass the responsibility for the IT infrastructure to someone else, exchanging the capital and support costs for a fixed periodic fee. This matters whatever the size of firm and whether you have scores of lawyers on many big cases or one lawyer working on a single case. For the former, it is an option, and one increasingly preferred even by the biggest firms. For the latter, the hosted route is the only way that a modest-sized firm can bring world-class software to bear on his or her cases.
The corollary to this is that the hosting company’s infrastructure has to stand up well to the pressure, and the role of IT Director is critical to that.
