Martin Bonney, International Consulting Director at Epiq in London, has long been advising organisations on the need to identify and manage their data, and on all the subjects loosely grouped under the heading “information governance”.
The General Data Protection Regulation, coming into force in May 2018, ought to provide an incentive for organisations to take this advice, and I asked Martin Bonney if he had seen signs of corporate readiness for the GDPR.
Martin Bonney says that Epiq has seen much corporate interest in preparing for the GDPR and a strong understanding, particularly in larger organisations, that they need to be doing something to prepare for it.
The challenge for many organisations of all sizes, he says, is crafting solutions which are proportionate and which deal with specific areas bearing the greatest risk.
A static report is not necessarily helpful in this context because data moves and changes all the time. Martin Bonney says that Epiq has developed a scalable data map which can be kept current. This is either offered to organisations as a service, or handed to them to keep current.
